Most ecommerce replatforms hurt SEO. Here's how Nalli's helped it.

Non-brand rankings on a high-volume ecommerce site are hard to win and harder to hold. Thousands of product, category and collection pages compete for crawl budget. Inventory changes constantly. Then a replatform arrives and threatens to undo years of progress overnight.

That was the situation at Nalli. Here's how we turned the migration into an SEO opportunity, in two phases.

Why replatforms are risky for SEO

Any one of these can wipe out ranking gains:

  • URL structures change and redirects are done wrong

  • Crawl signals are disrupted

  • Structured data loses relevance or disappears

  • Crawl budget is wasted on pages that shouldn't be crawled

On a large catalog, they usually happen together.

Phase 1: Using the replatform to improve the site

Instead of just trying to preserve what existed, we treated the new platform as a chance to fix it. That meant:

  • Refining the information architecture so categories and collections matched how shoppers search

  • Rebuilding structured data on the new templates

  • Preserving canonical signals so Google kept consolidating ranking strength on the right URLs

  • Keeping crawl priority on revenue pages, the non-brand URLs that drive sales

The site came out of the migration with non-brand rankings improving, not just holding.

Phase 2: Clearing the technical debt

Once the platform was stable, we went after crawl waste.

  • 404 pages. A large backlog of broken URLs was cleaned up, taking a large volume of dead pages out of Google's crawl queue.

  • Pages wrongly excluded from the index. Many pages carrying noindex were reviewed and made indexable again where they deserved to rank.

With less waste to crawl, Google could spend more time on the right pages. Non-brand rankings kept climbing.

The takeaway: technical SEO is a multiplier

On a large ecommerce site, content, links and everything else compound on top of the technical foundation, but only if it holds. Fix crawlability and indexation, and rankings follow.

The gains don't stay in SEO either. Stronger organic visibility supports paid search efficiency. It also helps in AI interfaces like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Claude: a site Google trusts to crawl and index is one AI models are more likely to surface.
